ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT FOR WOMEN LIVING WITH HIV supported by Chevron Nigeria plc
Giving priority to the most vulnerable women living with HIV, we promote their financial independence enhancing their self-esteem. This is how it works: we co-ordinate a revolving loan scheme where small loans are disbursed to support the small scale businesses the women are operating.
In 2010, we disbursed loans to 12 women living with HIV. 3 women were given twenty thousand naira each, one woman fifteen thousand and eight were given ten thousand naira each. The disbursement was based on the needs assessment of the business size, immediate needs and the capacity to repay. The loan is for a period of 5 months and repayment is on a weekly basis: five hundred naira per week for each beneficiary.
The Economic Empowerment initiative is the contribution of PATA to addressing the MDG One in Nigeria (To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger). The initiative will change the mind-set of those living with HIV from dependency to taking charge of their health and wellbeing and making contribution to family income.
